Privacy policy

Effective October 2, 2026. This is how fishline handles your information.

The short version

fishline measures fish from photos. To do that we keep your account, the photos you upload and the catch details you save. We do not sell your data. We do not run ad tracking. You can delete your account and everything in it from Settings.

What we collect

Account. Your name, email address and a hashed version of your password. We never store the password itself.

Photos. The photos you upload to measure a fish or share a catch. They are stored on Vercel Blob, the file storage our site runs on.

Catch details. The species, length and weight we estimate, plus anything you add: state and county, an optional waterbody, the catch method, whether the fish was released, a caption, and the Spot you file it under.

Messages. The direct messages you send and receive, with any photos in them, so the conversation is there when you come back. Other anglers can't see them. If someone reports a message, our team can read that message and the few before it in the conversation to review the report.

Reports. When you report a catch, a comment, a message or an angler, we keep the report and the reason you gave. We never tell the other angler who reported them.

Photo date and location. Phone cameras write the date and sometimes the GPS location into the photo file (EXIF data). When it is there fishline reads it before the upload and keeps the date and place with the catch, privately. They are never shown to other anglers. The photo itself is stored with that data removed, along with the camera details, so a photo you share does not carry your location. Turning off location for your camera app stops the location part.

Usage. Which screens you open and which features you use, like measuring a fish or viewing a plan. We store this ourselves to understand what anglers use and to fix problems. It is not shared with ad networks.

Payments. If you buy a plan on the website, Stripe handles the payment. Stripe gets your card details; we only get confirmation of what you bought and a customer reference. We never see your card number.

How your photos are analyzed

When you measure a fish, the photo is sent to OpenAI, whose vision models identify the species and estimate the length and weight. Under OpenAI's API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train their models. The photo is sent only for that analysis.

What other anglers can see

A catch stays in your own Catch Log until you share it. If you post a catch to the community, other fishline users can see the photo, the numbers, your name and the details you chose to include. You can delete a shared catch at any time.

Private catches that have a weight and a state still count on the Catch Map. The All Catches view lists them with no name, photo, spot or water: anyone viewing it sees the species, weight, length, county and month of the catch, and nothing that says it was yours. The map never shows a GPS pin for a private catch.

Keeping it safe

Passwords are stored only as a bcrypt hash. We never ask for your date of birth or your phone number. Location data is removed from every photo before it is stored, and the coordinates kept with a catch are never shown to other anglers. More on how we protect your data.

Who we share with

Only the services that run the product: Vercel (hosting and photo storage), Neon (the database), OpenAI (photo analysis), Stripe (website payments) and Brevo or Resend (account emails like password resets, and our newsletter if you sign up for it). Each one gets only what it needs to do its job. We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertisers.

Email

We send account emails through Resend: things like password resets and receipts. If we send anything else, every message has a way to opt out.

Deleting your account

Open Settings and choose Delete Account. Your account is marked for deletion and you are signed out everywhere. Your catches, photos and posts stop showing in the app and on the web, and the data is removed from our systems. If you would rather we do it, email nate@rackline.ai from the address on the account.

A plan bought on the website is cancelled with the account. Plans bought through the App Store or Google Play are managed by Apple or Google. Cancel them there; deleting the account does not stop store billing.

Children

fishline is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and let you know in the app or by email.

This policy is governed by the laws of the State of Iowa, United States.
